To become a game developer, designer, programmer, etc you don’t have to get a Bachelors degree in specifically game design. A very viable option (for programming) is to get a degree in the computer science field. That will certainly help you in acquiring a job in not only game development but in general computer programming and software development.

USC’s game design program has been rated number one in North America, by GamePro magazine and The Princeton Review, two years in a row!
It has graduated successful people in the indie gaming scene including Jenova Chen of thatgamecompany and Justin hall of GameLayers. All of which, almost immediately after graduating, have made a game or have their own game studios.

DigiPen was founded in 1998, making it one of the oldest game design programs in the country.
From Reading Reviews, you will certainly learn if game design is for you or not. The programming at the school really goes into depth, and has you writing over 200 lines of code for an easier assignment. This school will certainly get you ready for a job.
One of the recent graduates, Kim Swift, developed the hit game Portal. Which truly speaks for itself. It’s a great school for game design.

Drexel has several programs for game design and development. As such graduates from these programs have had a variety of jobs all over the games industry.
Two notable people that have come out of this program are Tom Fulp, who developed Alien Hominid and the site Newgrounds, and Jack Wall who composed award winning music for Myst III & IV.

RPI has a Games & Simulation Arts and Science Program. It has several graduates that have gone on to become CEO’s.
There is Kathrik Bala CEO of Vicarious Visions which made Guitar Hero Wii. Tobi Sauliner worked at Vicarious Visions for five years then became CEO of 1st Playable Productions which does Cartoon Networks Ben 10 and Secret Saturdays games for the DS. Then there’s Mike DelPrete who is CEO of Agora Games which creates online game technology which is used by Guitar Hero and Call of Duty.

The school has a large technical emphasis which is very fitting for a game design program. It’s a good school that has a lot of opportunities.
A notable person from there is Chris Dyl, chief technology officer at Turbine; Ichiro Lambe, and principle designer at Dejobaan Games, which created AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!!. Another notable person is Mike Gesner who is the lead designer of Second Life.
